Dragon*Con 2003

I have one last story to tell involving 2 hobbits and a chicken. On Sunday night, it seemed like the majority of the people were in the Hyatt lobby. It was packed with people mostly in costume posing for pictures. We had been there for a couple of hours taking pictures when we decided it was time for some Hobbit grub. We came back to the lobby just before mid-night to find it even more crowded than before. We decided to call it a night, but before we left we waited to say goodbye to some new friends. My family was downstairs avoiding the crowds, so I decided to tell them that we were going to leave shortly. Merry decided to accompany me down the elevators.

The elevators were packed, so we got on one that was going up figuring that we would stay on it when it went down. Imagine our surprise when it came back down and a hotel employee told us to get out that they were "commandeering" the elevator. After telling him that we were trying to get to my husband and son, he told us to stay on but get back. The next thing we see is this huge clawed foot come around the corner, and then the entire body of an 8 foot monster chicken starts walking towards us.

Now we are in a rather small glass elevator, and we are both wondering how this is going to work. I am sure that several people know about the children's book "Where the Wild Things Are".  A group of people showed up at the con dressed as the wild things (Amazing costumes), and this was the chicken from that book. I guess I'm weird, but I never liked these characters. Okay, so they freaked me out.  Heather told me they were in the lobby. I stayed put on the other side to avoid an encounter and  now I was stuck in the elevator with one. Of course, our friends could see us and thought this was hilarious, and judging from the photo flashes it must have looked odd with 2 hobbits squished against the glass with the big chicken deciding if Second Breakfast was not such a bad idea. Unfortunately, Heather couldn't get a picture at her angle with the flashes. But eventually, we found it caught on film on the Official DragonCon Site...
